Quad vs Buggy vs Jeep in Marsa Alam: Which Desert Ride Should You Book?

Off-road buggy driving across flat desert sand, one of the three ways to ride the desert in Marsa Alam: quad vs buggy vs jeep

Quad vs buggy vs jeep in Marsa Alam comes down to who wants to drive. On a quad you ride your own machine from age 16; in a buggy one adult drives and the others sit belted in beside them; in the 4x4 on the Super Safari a driver does the work. Here is how the three compare for ages, comfort, families and couples.

The desert behind Marsa Alam is only a short drive from the hotels, and there are three ways to ride it: on a quad bike, in an off-road buggy or in a 4x4 jeep. All three cross the same kind of landscape, with dry riverbeds, open sandy plains, dunes and the Red Sea Hills on the horizon. What changes is who drives, how close you feel to the ground, who in your group can join and how much else fits into the trip. This guide compares the three side by side, using the rules of our live tours, so you can pick the ride that suits your group.

The short answer

  • Choose a quad if you want to drive your own machine and feel every bump. Riders aged 16 and over drive their own quad, and no licence or experience is needed.
  • Choose a buggy if you want to drive but keep everyone together. One adult aged 18 or over drives, the others sit belted in, and there is a roll cage around you.
  • Choose the jeep if you would rather sit back and let someone experienced drive. The 4x4 is part of our Super Safari, which also includes a quad leg, a camel ride and dinner in the desert.
  • Travelling with young children? The buggy takes passengers from age four, and the full desert safaris take children from age three as passengers.

If you have already decided on a quad, our first-timer’s guide to quad biking in Marsa Alam explains the ride step by step, with riding tips. This article looks at the bigger choice between the three vehicles.

Who drives: you, one adult, or our driver

This is the biggest difference between the three, and the easiest way to decide.

  • Quad: you drive. Each rider aged 16 or over has their own quad and follows the guide in a convoy. After a safety briefing and a short practice loop, most first-timers feel at home within minutes. A double quad lets a child or partner ride behind an adult if you ask when you book.
  • Buggy: one adult drives for the whole buggy. Drivers must be 18 or older. In the family buggy safari up to four people share one four-seat buggy; in the private buggy safari two people share a two-seat buggy, side by side. Everyone else is a passenger, strapped in and wearing a helmet.
  • Jeep: our driver drives. On the Super Safari you climb into a 4x4 for an off-road drive over dunes and through desert valleys, and the driver reads the terrain and adjusts the ride to the group. Nobody in your group needs to drive at all.

A simple test: if everyone in your group wants their own handlebars, book quads. If one person loves driving and the others would rather enjoy the view, a buggy works better. If nobody wants to drive, the jeep is for you.

Ages and who can join

Age rules decide many family bookings, so here they are trip by trip:

  • The quad bike tour is for ages eight and up. Riders aged 16 and over drive their own quad; children aged 8 to 15 ride as passengers with a guide.
  • The family buggy safari takes children from age four as passengers, with an adult aged 18 or over driving.
  • The private buggy safari needs a driver aged 18 or over. If you would like to bring a child as the passenger, ask us first.
  • The Super Safari and the classic desert safari welcome children from age three. They ride in the jeep, with a guide on a quad or in the support vehicle, and under-16s never drive a quad alone.

For families with small children, the full safaris often work best, because the camels, the Bedouin village visit and the campfire matter as much to children as the engine. Our guide to Marsa Alam with kids has more ideas for every age.

Comfort, dust and safety gear

All three rides are guided, and the pace is kept safe and comfortable for the group. They still feel very different:

  • On a quad you sit astride the machine, steer with handlebars and feel every dip in the sand. It is the most adventurous of the three. Helmets are provided and must be worn, and the convoy is spaced out so riders behind are not in the worst of the dust.
  • A buggy has four wheels, side-by-side seats, a sturdy roll cage and seat belts on every seat, so it rides more steadily than a quad. Helmets are provided on both buggy trips, and goggles too on the family buggy safari. On the private buggy safari, scarves and goggles can be bought or rented at the base.
  • In the jeep you sit as a passenger. Expect some fun bumps and dune climbs, but the driver adjusts the intensity, and it is comfortable for families.

Whichever you choose, it is the desert, so there will be some dust. Wear closed shoes and clothes you can wash afterwards, and bring sunglasses and a scarf or buff to pull over your mouth and nose. Our Marsa Alam packing list covers the rest of your week.

How long, what time, and what else is included

The vehicle is only part of the choice. The trips also differ in length and in what comes with them:

  • Quad bike tour: about three hours in the afternoon, with pickup around 3:30 PM, a ride to a sunset viewpoint over the Red Sea Hills, and Bedouin tea. No dinner, so you are back at your hotel in good time for the evening.
  • Family buggy safari: about three hours, in the morning or at sunset. The drive goes through wadis, canyons, open plains and dunes, with a stop for tea at a Bedouin camp and a panorama photo stop.
  • Private buggy safari: about three hours, with pickup around 8:30 AM or 2:30 PM. A canyon drive leads to a panorama stop where the desert runs down to the Red Sea, then a faster run back across the open flats, with Bedouin tea at the base.
  • Classic desert safari: about five to six hours in the afternoon, with around 45 minutes to an hour of quad riding split into segments, a camel ride, the Ababda village and a barbecue dinner under the stars.
  • Super Safari: the longest evening, about six to seven hours, with pickup around 2:00 PM. It combines the 4x4 drive, a quad loop, the Bedouin village, a camel ride at sunset and a barbecue dinner with music and stargazing. Every activity is optional, so anyone who would rather stay in the jeep can.

There is no jeep-only trip: the 4x4 drive is part of the Super Safari. If you want a short ride and nothing else, the quad bike tour and the two buggy safaris are the three-hour options; if you want the whole desert evening, choose the classic safari or the Super Safari, and our Super Safari vs Desert Safari comparison helps you pick between them.

Which ride suits your group?

  • Families with young children: the family buggy safari keeps everyone in one vehicle, or the Super Safari if nobody wants to drive and you would like dinner in the desert too.
  • Families with teenagers: quads, so the over-16s can drive their own, or a family buggy if a parent would rather keep everyone together.
  • Couples and pairs of friends: the private two-seat buggy for a drive together, or quads side by side if you both want to drive.
  • Groups with mixed tastes: the Super Safari, where the adventurous ride the quad leg and the rest stay in the jeep.
  • Short on time: any of the three-hour trips, which leave your morning or evening free.

How the price works also differs. The quad bike tour and the full safaris are priced per person, with a child rate on the full safaris, while the buggies are priced per buggy, not per person. A group of five books two family buggies, and a group of three or four books two private buggies; the booking form works this out for you and always shows the live price.

Still deciding? Our guide to the best Marsa Alam safari tours compares every desert trip in one place, and our hotel pickup checker shows which trips collect from your area. The buggy safaris pick up from Marsa Alam town, Port Ghalib and Coraya Bay; the quad bike tour also from Madinat Coraya; and the Super Safari also from El Quseir, for a surcharge.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on who wants to drive. A quad suits riders aged 16 and over who want their own machine, a buggy suits groups where one adult drives and the others ride along, and the jeep on the Super Safari suits anyone who would rather be driven.

Riders aged 16 and over can drive their own quad, and buggy drivers must be 18 or older. Children aged 8 to 15 ride as passengers with a guide on the quad bike tour, and children from age four ride as passengers in the family buggy.

No. Both start with a safety briefing and a short practice drive, and your guide leads the convoy and sets a comfortable pace.

A buggy has a roll cage, seat belts on every seat and four wheels with side-by-side seats, so it rides more steadily than a quad. Both trips are guided, and helmets are provided on both.

Not with us. The 4x4 drive is part of the Super Safari, which also includes a quad loop, a camel ride, a Bedouin village and dinner. Every activity is optional, so you can stay in the jeep if you prefer.
