Super Safari vs Desert Safari in Marsa Alam: Which Desert Evening to Book?

Super Safari vs Desert Safari comes down to one thing: the 4x4 jeep. Both evenings include a quad ride, a camel ride at sunset, an Ababda Bedouin village and a barbecue dinner under the stars; the Super Safari adds an off-road jeep drive, starts a little earlier and gets back a little later. Here is how to choose.
Our two big desert evenings from Marsa Alam look almost the same on paper, and the question we hear most on WhatsApp is which one to book: the Super Safari or the classic Desert Safari? Both take you into the Eastern Desert in the afternoon, and both include a quad ride, a camel ride as the sun goes down, a visit to an Ababda Bedouin village and a barbecue dinner with music and stargazing. The difference is a 4x4 jeep drive, about half an hour more at each end of the day, and how the evening is paced. This guide puts the two side by side, using the details of our live tours, so you can pick the one that fits your group.
The short answer
- Book the classic Desert Safari if you want the full desert evening in one trip: a quad ride, a camel at sunset, the Bedouin village and dinner under the stars. It is our bestselling desert trip and the shorter of the two.
- Book the Super Safari if you want all of that plus an off-road drive in a 4x4 jeep over dunes and through desert valleys. It starts earlier, finishes later, and every activity on it is optional.
- Not everyone in your group wants to ride a quad? The Super Safari is the easier fit, because you can stay in the jeep or relax at camp while the others ride.
- Staying near Sharm El Luli? The Desert Safari lists pickup from Sharm El Luli hotels and the Super Safari does not, so ask us before you book the Super Safari.
If you are still deciding whether you want a full desert evening at all, or how it compares with a short quad or buggy ride, start with our guide to the best Marsa Alam safari tours, which compares every desert trip we run.
What both evenings include
Most of the evening is the same on both trips. Each one includes:
- Air-conditioned hotel pickup and drop-off.
- A guided quad bike ride across the desert, with fuel and a safety briefing. No licence or experience is needed.
- A camel ride around sunset.
- A visit to an Ababda Bedouin village, with a glass of sweet tea.
- A barbecue dinner with vegetarian options, followed by traditional music and a guided look at the night sky.
- A licensed guide, water and a guide who speaks your language.
So if your main worry is missing the camels or the dinner by choosing the shorter trip, you will not. You get the quad, the camel, the village and the stars either way. Our Bedouin village guide explains what that stop is like and how to make the most of it, from the tea to the questions worth asking.
What the Super Safari adds: the 4x4 jeep drive
The Super Safari starts with a 4x4 jeep drive. About an hour after pickup you climb into the jeep with an experienced driver for an off-road run over dunes and through dry desert valleys. Expect some fun bumps and dune climbs; the driver reads the terrain and adjusts the ride to the group, so it stays comfortable for families and for anyone who has never been off-road before.
After the jeep you swap to a quad bike for a guided desert loop, then continue to the Bedouin village and your camel ride as the sun sets. Every activity on the Super Safari is optional, so anyone who would rather stay in the jeep or relax at camp can do exactly that. That makes it a good choice for mixed groups, where one person wants speed and another just wants the view and a cup of tea.
On the classic Desert Safari there is no jeep drive. The quad ride is the adventurous part, with around 45 minutes to an hour of actual riding split into stretches with stops, so it never feels rushed or tiring. If you have read our quad vs buggy vs jeep comparison, this is the same choice in a nutshell: the Super Safari is the only trip we run with a jeep in it.
Timings side by side
Both are afternoon-into-evening trips timed for sunset. Exact pickup times depend on your hotel and are confirmed by WhatsApp the day before.
- Desert Safari: about five to six hours. Pickup around 2:30 PM, the quad ride from about 3:30 PM, the Bedouin village around 4:45 PM, the camel ride at sunset, dinner from about 6:30 PM, and back at your hotel around 8:30 PM.
- Super Safari: about six to seven hours. Pickup around 2:00 PM, the jeep drive from about 3:00 PM, the quad loop from about 4:00 PM, the Bedouin village and camel ride from about 5:00 PM, dinner from about 6:30 PM, and back at your hotel around 9:00 PM.
The extra hour matters most for young children and for anyone with an early start the next morning. If you have a dive or a long day trip the following day, the shorter Desert Safari leaves you a little more sleep. If your evening is free and you want to make the most of the desert, the Super Safari gives you more of it.
Which one suits your group?
- Your first desert evening, or a tight schedule: the Desert Safari. It covers every highlight in a little less time.
- You want to see the desert from a jeep as well as from a quad: the Super Safari.
- Mixed groups, where not everyone wants to drive: the Super Safari, because every activity is optional and the jeep keeps the group together.
- Families with young children: both welcome children from age three as passengers, and under-16s never drive a quad alone. On the Super Safari children ride in the jeep or with a guide on a quad; on the Desert Safari they ride with a guide on a quad or in the support vehicle. If your children tire easily, the earlier return of the Desert Safari helps.
- Travelling alone: the tour pages list the Desert Safari for 1 to 20 people and the Super Safari for 2 to 24, so message us first if you are on your own and want the Super Safari.

Pickup, what to bring and booking
Both trips include air-conditioned pickup from hotels in Marsa Alam town, Port Ghalib and Coraya Bay, and from El Quseir with a surcharge. The Desert Safari also lists Sharm El Luli hotels. Our hotel pickup checker shows which trips collect from your area.
Pack the same things for either evening: closed shoes, sunglasses and a hat, a scarf for the dust and a warm layer, because the desert cools quickly after sunset. Our packing list for Marsa Alam covers the rest of your week.
Both trips are priced per person, with a lower price for children, and the booking form on each tour page always shows the current price. The Super Safari costs a little more because of the jeep drive and the longer evening. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before the start.
Still torn? The scenery is the same rocky Eastern Desert on both trips, the landscape that runs south towards Wadi El Gemal National Park, so you will not miss out either way. Choose the Super Safari if the jeep appeals to you, and the Desert Safari if you would rather keep the evening simple.

You can, but they share most of the evening. If you have a week, it usually makes more sense to pick one and spend another day at sea or on a Nile day trip.
